Guilford Students Lead Hunger Challenge

Madi Spivey ’24 and John Alfaro Romero ’24 are MVP Student Hunger Ambassadors leading Guilford College’s drive in the fourth-annual Collegiate Hunger Challenge sponsored by Food Lion Feeds and N.C. Campus Engagement.

The competition among 15 of the state’s colleges and universities runs until Jan. 6, 2023, and will award $22,000 in cash and prizes to winning colleges for their efforts to fight hunger on and around their campuses. Schools earn points based on activities centered on combating and raising awareness about food insecurity.

Madi and John were selected by Guilford to be campus leaders for the Challenge because of their efforts coordinating the Quaker Cupboard, an on-campus food pantry.

The Challenge was created by Food Lion Feeds and N.C. Campus Engagement, a collaborative network of colleges and universities committed to educating students on civic and social responsibility.

“We know hunger on and around college campuses is a significant issue, and we’re excited to partner with the next generation of leaders to find solutions for our neighbors in need,” says Kevin Durkee, Manager of Food Lion Feeds.

Winners will be announced Jan. 13 and awarded Feb. 15 at the N.C. Campus Compact President’s Forum at High Point University.
