In partnership with Campus Pride, BestColleges recently published its list of LGBTQ+-friendly colleges, highlighting the best colleges for LGBTQ+ students in several states.
The most critical support services for LGBTA+ students are identity development, campus climate, and policy, according to the American Council of Education. While some schools struggle to provide such support, many have made progress. This progress includes support for trans and nonbinary students, LGBTA+ students, and LGBTQ+ students of color.
BestColleges writes that it chose Guilford because of the College's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, residence halls that provide gender-inclusive options, and student activities coordinated by Guilford College Pride, an active student organization. It also notes the College's Health and Counseling Center, which offers confidential assistance to students.
“I appreciate that Campus Pride has once again recognized Guilford for its support of LGBTQIA+ students,” says Dean of Students Steve Mencarini. “While we recognize that our work and efforts will never be completed, it is valuable to know that we are on the forefront of fighting for equity.”
Guilford ranks 5 on the Campus Pride Index out of five stars. Only one other North Carolina higher-education institution, Elon University, is recognized with this honor. In addition to the Campus Pride rating, BestColleges' ranking emphasizes affordability and academic quality metrics, including admission rate, enrollment, and graduation rates, and accreditation.
