Guilford’s Psychology Department is raising money to install an on-campus bike rack and bike station to memorialize Claire Morse, a retired professor who died in 2021.
Claire Morse is remembered as an invaluable member of Guilford's Psychology Department from 1976 until she retired in 2011. She taught a range of classes — she had tremendous range intellectually. She also had tremendous range interculturally, leading study abroad groups to Munich, Brunenberg, Guadalajara, and London. She headed the Faculty Development program and fought for social justice on and off campus.
She also rode her bike relentlessly, and the department would like to honor Claire’s contributions to the College by raising money to pay for an on-campus bike rack and bike station.
A minimum of $10,000 is needed by May 15, 2022, for a bike rack to be designed and installed by a renowned Greensboro sculptor Jim Gallucci. It would sit in front of King Hall, with a bike station near it for people to make needed repairs.
At last report, donations from 52 people totaled $7,500 toward the goal. Jim provided designs for three designs, and there is enough money for the deluxe model — a double bike rack with a bench between, and likely enough for a bike station.
If the department raises more than $10,000, the extra will support anti-racist, anti-oppression, and equity work at the College.
