Community Invited to Annual Holiday Concert

The Guilford College Choir has a long tradition of presenting a holiday concert the Sunday after Thanksgiving Break. Interim President Jim Hood ‘79, a former member of the College Choir, will welcome the audience at the beginning of this year's program, which is titled We Gather Together

“This year’s concert is so much more than a celebration of the holiday season. It is an expression of joy and gratitude for the privilege to gather together as musicians and as a community to make music and enjoy simply being in the same space.”

Wendy Looker
Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities

The College community is invited to the concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5, in Dana Auditorium. It will last a little more than an hour and it will celebrate seasonal music from a variety of genres and cultures. (Masks are required indoors at all times.) In addition to the College Choir, the audience will enjoy performances by the Guitar Ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble, as well as featured solos from Music faculty Atiba Rorie (West African drumming), Norris Norwood (piano), and Drew Hays (saxophone).

It has been almost two years since the choir has performed a concert in person, and they’re excited to gather again to make music for the Guilford community.

“This year’s concert is so much more than a celebration of the holiday season,” says Wendy Looker, Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. “It is an expression of joy and gratitude for the privilege to gather together as musicians and as a community to make music and enjoy simply being in the same space.”

Alumni and Friends of Guilford (AFOG) will host a pre-concert cookie and cider reception on the brick patio in front of Dana Auditorium. (All food and drink will be served outdoors.) AFOG is raising money for the Music Department’s spring recruiting tour. The concert will also be live streamed on the Guilford College Facebook page for those unable to attend in person.

Students in the College Choir represent a variety of majors across campus, including Art, Health Sciences, Sustainable Food Systems, Education Studies, English and Media Studies, Exercise and Sport Sciences, Physics, Psychology, Religious Studies, Spanish, Sport Studies, Theatre Studies, and of course, Music.

Any student can participate in the College’s music ensembles, and four semesters in the College Choir fulfills the Embodied and Creative Engagement General Education requirement. Student leaders in the College Choir are recipients of the Edward Lowe Endowed Scholarship.

Please make plans to attend this special tradition and to celebrate the upcoming holiday season with the Guilford College community.
