“I grew up in a small town where everybody knows everybody, and I wanted to stick to that thing where you go outside of your home or your dorm, and you know everybody. It's good to see people you know whenever you go somewhere,” she says. “And at Guilford, professors actually know who you are and the things you do outside of academics.”

Cydney’s background will serve her well in her chosen profession. Originally interested in veterinary science after studying the subject in high school, she decided to change course and become a pharmacist, a role where her people skills and friendly personality will shine on a daily basis.

After earning her prerequisites at Guilford and graduating in the fall of 2021, Cydney plans to go to graduate school to become a pharmacist. She is looking into programs at N.C. State University, UNC Chapel Hill, and Campbell University.

Guilford Days

During her time at Guilford, Cydney has been involved with Guilford ROAR in which she helps walk animals on the weekend and advocates for animal rights. She also plays on the volleyball team. “It has been a great experience. The girls are amazing and we're all tight-knit, and it's like a little family,” she says. “I think of them as my sisters because they’re always here for me.”

Cydney has also noted her appreciation for Guilford professors and their understanding of the demands on her time. “We are focused mainly on academics, but they know that as a student-athlete you have those other priorities. They actively go out of their way to make sure you understand the topics in class so you can get the grade you need.”

Because she didn’t have much background in the subject, Cydney struggled in Chemistry 111, so a professor suggested tutoring. The experience gave her some perspective.

“Tutoring is not something you should be ashamed of. We all need help to learn, and finding how you learn is the perfect way for you to get through college. It helps you discover who you are as a person,” she explains.

All-Weather Friends

Cydney also worked on the COVID-19 Hotline with Susan Smith, retired Administrative Assistant for Counseling and Coordinator of Student Health, in Student Health Services. During her internship, she learned a lot about COVID in general and how the quarantine process works, as well as the incubation period of COVID. 

“Susan is an amazing person, and she always wants the best for you,” Cydney says. “At the beginning of the spring semester, I ended up in quarantine, and she did all the things you would see a mom do. Just knowing that type of person while away from home here on campus has been priceless.”
