Guilford College announced that the Edward M. Armfield Sr. Foundation of Greensboro has awarded the College an $800,000 grant in support of improvements to the Hege-Cox Art Building and for the implementation of the Guilford Edge.
Since the late 1800s when New Garden Boarding School became the College, the Armfield family has been an integral member of Guilford’s experiences and successes. Edward M. Armfield Sr. served on the Board of Visitors in the 1960s and 1970s and his widow, Adair P. Armfield, was recognized with an honorary degree in 2017 for her long-standing service to the community and philanthropy. The Edward M. Armfield Sr. Foundation has been a dedicated benefactor, including funding for improvements to Armfield Athletic Center.
Art is a very important facet of the College’s revamped curriculum within the Guilford Edge because of the emphasis placed on nurturing creativity and innovation in Guilford students. The Hege-Cox Art Building was already a vital space on campus, and it will continue to be a great asset with the anticipation of more Art majors and a larger number of non-majors enrolled in Art classes who will benefit from learning and practicing with creative thought and critical processes.
The building will serve as both a state-of-the-art instructional facility and a space for students, faculty, staff, and alumni to use for community-building programs and activities. For example, the atrium and gallery space will showcase art by students and other talented artists.
