Friends,
I’m writing to let you know that trustee emeritus Howard Hinshaw ’60 died August 5 in Charlotte. He served his alma mater as a trustee for 18 years from 1985-2003 and represented the fourth generation of his Quaker family to attend Guilford.
A celebration of Howard's life after the manner of Friends will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, at 2 pm in the Great Room at Southminster Retirement Home at 8919 Park Road in Charlotte, N.C. All are welcome to attend. For additional details, email hinshawfamilycharlotte@gmail.com.
As a trustee he was chair of the Quaker Life and Heritage Committee and worked on the Teachers, Officers, and Curriculum Committee and Buildings and Grounds Committee, as well as the Budget and Audit Committee.
In a tribute to Howard in 2003, trustees noted, “He is perceived as presenting thoughtful views on complex issues after listening quietly for a time. He is felt as a friendly presence out of which he speaks selectively and on target, displaying gentle wisdom.”
After graduating from Guilford with a Chemistry degree, Howard attended the UNC School of Medicine and completed medical training in endocrinology and internal medicine. He spent 27 years at the Nalle Clinic in Charlotte.
He served on the board of Friends Homes in Greensboro and was active in the Charlotte Friends Meeting, to which he lent his talents for woodworking, carpentry and property management and served as Clerk of Finance.
Howard and his wife, Virginia, a nurse, generously supported the Frank Family Science Center at Guilford as well as a family education fund honoring his parents, Seth and Mary Edith Hinshaw. Seth was once Executive Director of N.C. Yearly Meeting.
Please hold Virginia and their family including daughter Jennifer Adair ’94 in the Light in this time of loss.
Warmly,
Kyle Farmbry
President
