In the interest of broadening its access to information about and assessments of campus matters, the Board of Trustees of Guilford College includes student attenders as observer-participants on some of its councils. The councils manage the bulk of the Board’s oversight work, so the presence of students along with faculty in such meetings assists Board members in deepening their knowledge of trends, concerns, and aspirations.
Since some Board councils and committees regularly address personnel and other confidential matters, students and faculty attenders are not assigned to all groups. The following Councils welcome student attenders:
- Academic Environment
- Constituent Engagement and Reputation
- Philanthropy
- Student Experience and Success
Student attenders to these councils are recommended to the President by the Guilford Student Body Association and appointed by the President in consultation with the Dean of Students. The Office of the President maintains records of those students chosen to serve and informs them of meetings and agendas.
In some cases, councils are required to hold executive sessions during their regular meetings to consider confidential matters. Student attenders and others who are not named members of the council will be excused from executive sessions and will not have access to minutes for that portion of the meeting.
