Individuals who choose to bring pets onto campus must be in control of their pet at all times, clean up after their pets and not leave them unattended at any time. Guilford College prohibits pets in all student residence halls except as outlined in this policy.
Purpose/Reason for Policy: This policy was developed in order to uphold federal, state, and local laws and regulations, ensure the health and safety of the community, assure humane treatment of animals on campus, preserve the integrity of campus grounds, buildings, and other property, and support a healthy educational environment that respects the rights of individuals.
Scope/Covered Persons: All members of the Guilford College Community
Definitions:
Pets: Dogs, cats, rodents, snakes, fish in tanks larger than 10 gallons, birds, or other animals kept as companions. This does not include animals used for approved research or officially designated service animals.
To be “in control” of a pet: Dogs on a leash, animals being transported in a crate, etc.
The Policy: Because of North Carolina and Greensboro Public Health Regulations and the College's concern for the health and wellbeing of all, all pets are prohibited by students or their guests in Guilford College residence halls, theme housing, and/or apartments, except as outlined in this policy. The only exceptions to this policy are [1] those officially designated as Service Animals and [2] fish in a 10-gallon or smaller tank.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- The Associate Dean of Students is responsible for assuring compliance within Guilford College-owned or managed student residence facilities.
- Those campus officials responsible for other locations on campus [Facilities Office for grounds, etc.] are responsible for assuring compliance within their areas of responsibility, outside of student residence facilities.
Compliance:
- Failure on the part of students, employees and/or college vendors to comply with this policy — or to comply with instructions by campus officials to do so — may be grounds for disciplinary action.
- Failure on the part of visitors and guests to comply with this policy — or to comply with instructions by campus officials to do so — may be grounds for removal from campus.
