College Mourns Death of Gus Davis III ’72

The Guilford College community lost a devoted trustee, loyal alumnus, generous benefactor, and friend with the sudden death of Augustus L. “Gus” Davis III ’72 on Friday. We ask every Guilfordian to hold Gus’s wife, Ann, daughter Stephanie and son Eric in the Light at this time of loss.

Gus joined the Board of Trustees in 2019 and was an active leader in a period of transition at the College. He co-chaired the trustees’ Constituent Engagement and Reputation Council with Carla Brenner ’73, and they co-led Enrollment Stabilization and Recruitment, one of four working groups of trustees, alumni, parents, and campus representatives established by trustees in early 2021 to develop solutions to fiscal and other institutional challenges without implementing a program prioritization recommendation.

Prior to serving as a trustee, Gus was a member of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Guilford honored him with the Alumni Excellence Award in 2002. As a student, Gus majored in History and played baseball for coach Stuart “Rock” Maynard '43 for four years.

In a business career spanning decades, Gus rose to levels of executive leadership with several companies. He was senior vice president, supply chain operations and logistics, for The Pause Group beginning in mid-2019 and, before that, executive vice president of operations for boom! Creative Development.

Notably, he worked for Avon Products, where he was mentored by future Tupperware CEO Rick Goings ’70 and recognized as a top-10 sales increase leader for Avon, worldwide, in 1994. He also worked for Chesebrough-Ponds, Richardson-Vicks, and The Limited subsidiaries Bath & Body Works and Gryphon Development.

Gus was a loving husband to Ann and father to Stephanie and Eric, who have had their own significant career achievements. He enjoyed volunteering as a YMCA Little League baseball coach and as a youth mentor at the Harlem YMCA.

Many of you knew Gus much better than I had a chance to get to know him, so I want to also express my sympathies to all of you as well. It is difficult to lose a good colleague and good friend.

As we learn about memorial and other arrangements we will share that information with you.

Sincerely,
Kyle Farmbry
President
