Amid the disruption caused by COVID-19, the Guilfordian, the College's student-run newspaper, has continued its tradition of excellence in college journalism. It was recently recognized by the N.C. College Media Association (NCCMA) with several 2020 awards, announced and presented during the NCCMA 2021 conference on Saturday, Feb. 27.
The Guilfordian was honored with Best of Show awards in the newspaper and online news categories for small campuses (6,800 students and fewer). In addition, the student-run newspaper won honors as follows:
- First-place illustration, Hazel Wechsler, for her March 6 cover illustration.
- First place in sports writing, Trey Kawugule and Tori Maness, for “Spring 2020 sports: the season that wasn’t.” Trey, this year’s Managing Editor for the Guilfordian, served as Sports Editor in the 2019-20 school year.
- Second place in opinion writing went to “Guilford under fire” by Hannah Preston.
- Jenni Camhi, this year’s Editor-in-Chief, won third place in news writing for “Students protest program and staff cuts.”
- Articles by Features Editor Avi Kumar and Executive Copy Editor Calley Hull received honorable mentions in the feature writing and sports writing categories.
- An honorable mention for opinion writing went to Laura Quiceno ’20.
- An honorable mention in photography went to Arin Torres.
