The John Thomas Subak Emergency Fund at Guilford College, available to Guilford students in good standing, is now available. It’s designed to address unforeseen circumstances that arise and make it difficult for students to stay on track with their studies.
John Thomas Subak, or J.T. as he was known to his loved ones, left his homeland of the Czech Republic in the early 1940s to flee Nazi occupation and persecution. After serving in the U.S. Navy for three years, John attended Yale University for his undergraduate studies and then Yale Law School. He was a successful attorney in Philadelphia, finishing his career as a group vice president and director at Rohm and Haas.
Several decades after arriving in the United States, one of his beloved granddaughters attended and graduated from Guilford. Hannah K. Moran ’11, the granddaughter, and her husband, Steve, left Greensboro for Maine about three years ago. They have been generous in directing part of their family’s philanthropy to Guilford in celebration of John’s legacy for empowering others by providing access to education.
Guilford students experiencing a challenging financial situation are encouraged to apply for assistance from the fund. All Guilford students in good standing are eligible to apply.
The fund may be used for such things as past due utility bills, books for current classes, medical bills and medications, car repairs, and similar emergencies. Students should submit their application as soon as possible and no later than Jan. 15, 2021, for best consideration. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis until all funds are depleted for the 2020-21 academic year.
