Newsweek Names Early College at Guilford No. 1

Newsweek released its list of the top 500 STEM high schools in the country, ranking the Early College at Guilford seventh overall out of more than 20,000 high schools in the U.S.

STEM.org Educational Research™ (SER) developed the scoring system used to determine which primary/secondary institutions in America offer students the best experiences in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while preparing them for post-secondary outcomes.

This ranking also places the Early College at Guilford as the top STEM high school in N.C. and the No. 1 STEM high school in the southeast.

“This ranking solidifies what many of us in the district and community already know – GCS has some of the best schools in the nation. We are motivated to work even harder to provide our students additional opportunities to enroll in exceptional schools where they experience great outcomes. These rankings also demonstrate that the investments that the Board of Education has made are paying dividends in the lives of our students,” said Superintendent of Guilford County Schools Sharon L. Contreras.

The Early College at Guilford serves as a national model for Early College Entrance High Schools. Its mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by providing exceptionally challenging educational opportunities that support academic development at the highest standards.

Through building bridges at the earliest opportunity between high school, college, and beyond, Early College at Guilford seeks to awaken and mature the creative, social, and academic abilities of students.

The school offers a writing intensive, fast-paced curriculum in partnership with Guilford College. Students take honors and advanced placement courses in the ninth and 10th grades and college courses with undergraduate students taught by college professors in grades 11 and 12. Students graduate with a high school diploma and up to two years of credit from Guilford College.
