Reimagining the Academic Calendar

Guilford College students will take classes on a 3-12 calendar. This means each semester students will have one intensive 3-week course while the remaining 12 weeks will feature typical college course loads. Guilford students will engage in real, live learning as the three-week sessions offer travel possibilities, internships for credit and classes oriented toward tackling real-world challenges and opportunities. 

Imagine taking a trip to Japan with the Modern Language Studies Department to explore the Japanese journey post-World War II. Or you could join the Geology Department in a trip to the Western United States to study its vast geological and environmental landscapes. The world becomes your classroom, from India to Kenya to all corners of the U.S., no matter your major. Each course will be team-taught by professors of different disciplines, giving you the opportunity to explore a variety of topics in exciting, engaging ways.

Grant Gives Guilford an Added Edge

“I’m really excited for this as a Biology major and Psychology minor,” says first-year student Kennedy Ruff ’22. Originally from Durham, N.C., Kennedy aspires to be a child psychiatrist. She envisions the Mellon grant, awarded to Guilford for curriculum development, will lead to great opportunities to “go out in the community and practice different learned behavior or active listening on younger children and physically see the effect.”
