Soprano Destini Nyorkor '26 is a member of the Guilford College Choir, which will perform Sunday night at Dana Auditorium.
The concert, which takes place Sunday, December 7, is free and open to the public at Dana Auditorium.
Soprano Destini Nyorkor ‘26 was born to sing. No, really. When mom first heard Destini’s screams seconds after she was born, her fate was sealed.
“My mom liked to tell me, ‘with those pipes you're going to be a singer,” says Destini, smiling at the story she’s heard through the years.
Over and over again Margaret Nyorkor was proven right, of course. At church, when, as a child, Destini sang in the United Methodist Choir back home in Maryland. Then, in high school and now in the choir at Guilford College.
On Sunday, December 8, at 7 pm Destini and 65 other singers and instrumentalists will gather on stage in Dana Auditorium for the College’s Annual Holiday Concert. The concert is free and open to the public.
In addition to the choir, Sunday’s concert allows Guilford to show off some of its most talented artists and groups including the Guilford College Guitar Ensemble, the Guilford College Harp Quartet, the LUMINA Treble Ensemble and the Guilford College Jazz Ensembles.
Destini is a Vocal Music and Psychology major who wants to help others as a music therapist after she graduates. She joined the Guilford College Choir as a first year and loves the idea of music and singing bringing so many different students and voices together.
“We’re such a diverse group,” she says. “You’ve got athletes and scientists and artists singing together. It’s so much fun being around others who might not be just like you but you’re all working together for the same goal.”
The concert has been a holiday fixture at the College since … well, no one knows, actually. “As long as anyone can remember,” says Wendy Looker, Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities. “I really don’t know. It’s a very long-standing campus tradition.”
Even during the pandemic, Wendy arranged for a virtual concert in 2021.
Before the concert, attendees are invited to gather in front of Dana for cider and cookies with friends beginning at 6:30 p.m. The concert is sponsored by the Alumni and Friends of Guilford.
The concert closes the fall semester at Guilford on an inspiring note, as exams conclude December 10 and students, faculty and staff prepare to head out for winter break.
