Sarah Munro '09 selected for Council on Foreign Relations’ Ambassador Program

Sarah was also selected to participate in an international program that will help Guilford design and facilitate virtual student exchanges.

The Council on Foreign Relations has selected Sarah Munro ’09, Guilford’s Director of Global and Off-Campus Initiatives, to be part of its 2024-25 Higher Education Ambassador program.

Sarah will participate in a nine-month program that connects educators across the country with resources, professional development activities and a robust professional network.

In selecting Sarah, the Council also acknowledges her commitment to preparing Guilford students to excel in study abroad programs by equipping them with knowledge, skills and a modern perspective.

“We want all of our students who study abroad to be actively engaged in global literacy,” says Sarah. “That means if they will be spending a few weeks or a semester somewhere in the European Union, we want them to know how countries interact with each other for instance on economies and refugees so they can immerse themselves better in their country.”

She adds, “If students are going to spend time in South Africa (where the College has launched several initiatives), we want them to know the geopolitics and economic interests of the countries where they will be loving and studying so they can again become more immersed, more a part of that country.”

The CFR’s announcement is the second recognition of Sarah in recent weeks. Last month the Virtual Exchange Academy selected Sarah to participate in an international program that will help Guilford design and facilitate virtual student exchanges.

Sarah says a minority-serving institution like Guilford has many students who can benefit from a virtual study abroad program before deciding if they want to take part in one of Guilford’s study abroad courses.

“I have a lot of students who have never left the state come to me and ask about study abroad and away opportunities,” says Sarah. “A virtual exchange will allow them to expand their horizons without even leaving the campus. If they need to build that confidence or comfort level, they’ll have that ability to become engaged with these different programs.”

CFR is an independent and nonpartisan nonprofit based in New York City that is focused on U.S. foreign policy and international relations.
