Guilford College’s Board of Trustees in late May approved the promotion of Associate Professor of Art Mark Dixon ’96 to Professor of Art.

At Guilford, the criteria for promotion includes teaching excellence, scholarship and creative activity, academic advising and service. The Faculty Affairs Committee and Provost Maria Rosales recommended Mark’s promotion to President Kyle Farmbry, who approved and forwarded it to the board.

“Mark is always examining how he teaches today’s students and connecting with them in creative ways,” says Maria. “He consistently seeks out new ideas and ways to collaborate with other faculty and staff.  He shows up with enthusiasm and creativity. Our students – our community, really – are fortunate to have him.”

Mark came to Guilford as an Assistant Professor in 2013 and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2017. Since 2018, Mark has been co-chair of the Art Department. He helped launch the College’s Experience Design (XD) program in 2016, working alongside other alumni and faculty.

Mark has been a frequent leader of workshops on pedagogy at the College and supports Guilford’s Quality Enhancement Plan, a focused set of initiatives designed to improve student learning across the College. He also works closely with Guilford’s Honors Program.

He has been a visiting artist in the Studio Art MFA programs at Western Carolina University and UNCG, and he serves on Associates in Fine Arts program advisory boards at Guilford Technical Community College and Rockingham Community College.

A prolific artist and performer, Mark has held numerous art exhibits in North Carolina and across the country over the past 20 years. He had a residency in Ireland in 2014.

He graduated from Guilford with a bachelor’s in Sculpture, and earned a master’s in Studio Art in 2003 from Carnegie Mellon University.
