Guilford College has received a $20,000 Grant from North Carolina Humanities. The grant will help implement "Guilford’s Freedom Trails," an innovative project designed to deepen students’ understanding of the Underground Railroad, and segments of it that were on what is now the Guilford College campus

“We are grateful to be among the organizations North Carolina Humanities selected to receive grant funding,” said Guilford President Kyle Farmbry, emphasizing the pivotal role the grant will play in enhancing community engagement and cultural understanding.  

The grant will support an immersive experience for Title I ninth and tenth-grade students in Greensboro. The project will include a walking tour of the Underground Railroad Trail in Guilford College Woods, led by humanities experts from the College. The tour aims to provide historical context and multiple perspectives, fostering critical thinking, empathy, and respect among students.

The grant will also contribute to the development of a comprehensive curriculum that will complement the tour and ensure a lasting educational impact on students. The project's one-year timeline will encompass outreach, partnership development, and curriculum creation, enabling Guilford to reach a diverse group of students, empowering them with knowledge from various humanities disciplines.

“The importance of cultural funding in our community and state cannot be overstated,” says Kyle. “This grant allows us to preserve and share our local history, creating a more informed and empathetic North Carolina.”

North Carolina Humanities is one of the oldest and largest cultural funders in North Carolina.
