Guilford College will host a series of three virtual presentations by immunologist Marna Williams, Ph.D., on understanding COVID.
These virtual sessions are open to the public and will be presented on Zoom on the following schedule:
Tuesday, Feb. 21, 6:30 pm, “Coronavirus and the COVID-19 Vaccines.” This will be an introduction to how the virus infects cells and how the immune system protects people from the virus after vaccination. Link to the Zoom discussion HERE.
Tuesday, March 14, 6:30 pm, “Understanding the Immune Response to the COVID-19 Vaccines.” This will be a discussion of the role of B cells and T cells in the immune response to the vaccines and how the robustness of the immune response differs across the vaccine platforms. Link to the Zoom discussion HERE.
Thursday, April 20, 6:30 pm, “What is Long COVID, and are there Therapeutics for COVID-19?” This will be a discussion of long COVID-19, the risk factors and preventative therapies for long COVID and/or severe COVID-19. Link to the Zoom discussion HERE.
All are invited to participate, free of charge. Zoom links will be published on this web page.
Marna has worked in the biopharmaceutical industry for 20 years in translational medicine and contributed to the development of therapeutics for cancer and autoimmune/inflammatory diseases.
Her educational background is in immunology and cellular biology. She earned her doctorate at Yale University and was a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University. She has authored more than 50 publications, presentations and scientific posters.
Marna’s research at Stanford focused on evaluation of the mechanisms of trafficking of cells that provide immune responses during viral infection (rotavirus).
She is the sister of Robert G. Williams, John K. Voehringer Jr. Professor of Economics emeritus, who taught at Guilford from 1978-2021.
