Honors student and English and Media Studies major Kaya Simpson ’22 always knew she wanted to attend Guilford.
“Having professors who know their students and want to connect with them influenced my time here tremendously. I felt like there was always someone I could turn to for help. I am a much happier and healthier person than I was before coming here. I feel connected and feel like I am prepared to take on whatever comes next.”
Growing up in Greensboro, Kaya was attuned to the College’s community focus and wanted to be part of it.
“I love the sense of community here,” she says. “I feel like people just make connections and friends all the time, and I enjoy meeting new people.” During her time at Guilford, Kaya was active on campus, from her officer position in the Yachting Club to being a member of Revelers.
She also notes the amazing professors who have enriched her learning and growth. Among her mentors are Robert K. Marshall English Professor and Honors Program Director Heather Hayton and Theatre Studies Professor Beth Ritson-Lavender.

And what comes next is her teaching career. Kaya was placed as an English and Drama teacher by the Southern Teachers Agency.
“I have not committed to a school yet but will be most likely teaching in the Raleigh/Durham area for high school level English and Literature,” she says. “I’m looking forward to being able to get others passionate about reading and to helping others build their critical-thinking skills.”
Kaya is also working on a publishing career. She wrote several pieces during her time at Guilford — a science-fiction short story and a paranormal short story. “They’re loosely based around shows and my experiences while studying theatre at Guilford,” she notes.
Her advice to Guilford students rings true to her own experience.
“Take full advantage of the events the College offers, but always remember to take time for yourself,” she says. “A lot of your time at Guilford is what you make of it and it's easy to find something that fits your interests.”
