President Kyle Farmbry announces that longtime secret admirer Laura Tew donates $1.16 million to the College.
I am delighted to share news about a $1.16 million gift to Guilford College from the estate of Laura Peeples Tew that will provide scholarship support for students graduating from Guilford County public high schools and enrolling at the College. In addition to creating an endowed fund that will sustain her commitment for generations, gift funding will be provided that allows the College to award scholarships beginning this fall.
What’s fascinating about the gift is that Ms. Tew was a quiet admirer of Guilford. A longtime Greensboro resident who lived off Horse Pen Creek Road a few miles from the College, she died in late 2020, 10 days shy of her 101st birthday. She did not attend Guilford, nor did anyone in her family. According to family members, over the years she enjoyed walking the campus and listening to music at the Eastern Music Festival in the summer. “I think being on campus made her feel better,” her niece says.
That Ms. Tew was so touched by what we do makes a critical statement on who we are as a College and how our mission extends into the community, whether we realize it or not on a daily basis. What it tells me is that you never know who’s watching. You never know who you might be impacting today or tomorrow. I’m proud Guilford made such an impact on Ms. Tew, and I suspect there are many more like her who have felt Guilford’s impact.
I hope you are as excited about the good news of Ms. Tew’s generosity as I am. Read more about it from the Office of Advancement.
