8 Tips to Help You Ace a Job Interview

Are you a college senior gearing up for your first job search?
Are you a college junior looking for that perfect summer internship?
Are you a college sophomore or first-year student looking for a summer job?

“Trust your gut and rely on the problem-solving skills you’re learning at Guilford to guide you.”

Amber Slade
Associate Director of Career Advising

Interviewing for a job or internship can be intimidating and exciting at the same time. But you can ace your next interview with these tips from Amber Slade, Associate Director of Career Advising in CAPE, the Guilford College integrated advising department.

Tips for virtual interviews are also included below. While working from home could be your reality, it’s also possible you’re interviewing for a job across the country — or the world — in which case going virtual is common.

  1. Remember that an interview is a conversation and not a test. “Speak about what you know. Being a cookie-cutter version of professionalism isn’t a requirement to enter the workforce,” Amber says. “Trust your gut and rely on the problem-solving skills you’re learning at Guilford to guide you.”
  2. Take your time. “Take a moment to gather your thoughts before answering questions,” she advises. “Your interviewer will appreciate a thoughtful answer rather than one that’s rushed and wordy.”
  3. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes. “I still recommend suiting up, but find a suit that fits you well,” Amber says. “Wear clothes you can breathe in. Don’t know how to walk in heels or just don’t like them? That’s okay! You don’t have to wear them.”
  4. Do your research. “Look up the company, the position, the projected salary, other postings with the same title, and the city where the company is located,” she suggests. Come prepared with your own questions, too. You want the company to be the right fit, and now’s your chance to find out what they’re all about.
  5. Be more than a robot. “Showcase your personality while keeping the conversation professional, and be personable with your body language,” Amber says. Sit up straight and smile. In a virtual interview, keep the camera at eye level and keep your eye on the camera, not the interviewer’s face, as you talk.
  6. Test your connection and prepare your background. Get dressed early, test your connection, and choose a quiet, well-lit spot. Set the scene! Interviewers want tech-savvy employees so show them you are one.
  7. Minimize distractions. Close windows, silence phones, turn off the TV. You're the main event — not your dog, your neighbor’s car alarm, or the garbage truck rumbling by.
  8. Prepare your answers — but don’t memorize them. Going back to No. 5, you don’t want to appear robotic. But you do want to have strong, memorable answers in mind. Here are a few of the most common interview questions. For how to answer these questions and more, check out such websites as the Muse, Indeed, Monster, and Forbes.
  • Why do you want to work for this company?
  • What are your greatest strengths/weaknesses?
  • Why should we hire you?
  • What is your greatest achievement?
  • Tell me about a challenge you’ve faced and overcome.
  • What kind of work environment are you looking for?
  • What motivates you?
  • What are your salary expectations?
