Guilford College recently ranked 40 out of 416 colleges and universities in the Princeton Review’s Guide to Green Colleges: 2021 Edition.
"I’m very proud that Guilford College has once again earned such a high ranking in the Princeton Review's Guide to Green Colleges,” says Director of Environmental Sustainability David Petree. “It demonstrates that Guilford has created a campus culture of environmental sustainability.”
The Princeton Review chose schools based on a survey of administrators at 695 colleges in 2019-20 about their institutions’ commitments to the environment and sustainability. The company's editors analyzed more than 25 survey data points in the process of choosing schools for the guide.
This is Guilford’s fourth consecutive year on the list and the second year in a row with a score of 95 out of 99.
"We strongly recommend Guilford College to students who want to study and live at a green college," said Rob Franek, the Princeton Review's Editor-in-Chief. "Each and every one of the outstanding colleges in this edition of our guide offers both excellent academics and exemplary evidence of environmental commitment. "
In its profile, the Princeton Review recognizes Guilford College for having the lowest energy costs per gross square foot of any institution of higher education in the region. It also cites the College’s Core Value of stewardship, its commitment to carbon neutrality (by 2047), environmentally focused student organizations, and LEED certifications as contributors to its ranking.
The Princeton Review has seen a high level of interest among college applicants and their parents in colleges with green practices, programs, and offerings. In the Princeton Review's 2020 College Hopes and Worries Survey, 66 percent of the 12,845 respondents (college-bound teens and parents) said that having information about a college's commitment to the environment would affect their (or their child's) decision to apply to or attend a school.
“Young adults, along with their parents, look to this respected publication to help guide them toward a college that fits their beliefs and values,” David says. “This ranking ensures that Guilford continues to attract students who are carbon and climate conscious."
