Health and Safety Task Force Update: Sept. 18, 2020

[Return to Guilford's COVID-19 Hub]

As the College begins the 12-week session, we continue to be pleased by how our community is responding to the pandemic. This is our fourth weekly update.

We have been busy conducting testing clinics. On Sept. 11, we tested 133 community members; on Sept. 14-15, we tested our 400 student athletes and other community members. Unfortunately, we were notified of two positive cases from the Sept. 11 testing clinic. One was a community member preparing to join our campus for the first time for the 12-week session. The second positive case was identified as a close contact to a prior positive case. This represents our first person-to-person transmission on campus. Both positive cases are currently isolating and are doing well. We are awaiting results from the Sept. 14-15 clinics.

While our numbers remain low, our first person-to-person transmission case should remind us all that we must remain individually and collectively dedicated to following our new health and safety protocols. The pandemic still has not reached its peak in North Carolina and at the present time cannot be controlled. As a community, we can control our own actions and behaviors in order to mitigate the virus.

Testing Next Week

Next Friday, Sept. 25, we will transition to our random COVID-19 testing during the 12-week, which will continue regularly throughout the semester. Those who are selected for the random testing will be notified Tuesday, Sept. 22. The testing will occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a location TBD. If you are not selected but would still like to be tested, there will be a link in the Guilford Buzz on Wednesday and Thursday to sign up for a timeslot.

Flu Shot Clinic

On-campus flu-shot clinics will be held next Thursday, Sept. 24, and Monday, Sept. 28. Details to come! Check the Buzz! Students will need a photo ID and their medical insurance card to get the shot. Most insurances cover the shot at no cost; if you have questions, please contact your insurance provider. If you have any questions about the flu-shot clinics please contact Student Health Services at 336.316.2194 or email studenthealth@guilford.edu.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO UTILIZE THESE IMPORTANT RESOURCES, AS NEEDED

As we shared last week, the College continues to urge all members of the Guilford community to proactively protect against, monitor, and report any potential virus symptoms they experience or observe in others. Here are the links to the forms we mentioned in our last communication.

Guilford College will take every effort to protect personally identifiable  information shared in these documents and will not disclose your identity or the identity of anyone with a coronavirus diagnosis unless disclosure to safety and first aid personnel is required for emergency treatment or is otherwise required by law.

Be on the lookout for our next weekly update — to be posted online Sept. 25. Please remember that if you have any questions related to COVID-19 and our efforts to mitigate the pandemic on campus, please call the COVID-19 Hotline at 336.316.2319.  We are all in this together!

Sincerely,

Jermaine Thomas
Director of Public Safety
Health and Safety Task Force Chair
