Health and Safety Task Force Update: Sept. 11, 2020

[Return to Guilford's COVID-19 Hub]

We have made it to the end of our three-week session, and we are celebrating our small wins and achievements that give us reason for optimism moving forward. At the same time, we must avoid complacency and remain diligent in following our health and safety protocols. This is our third weekly update.

Here is a short recap of our pandemic statistics from the first day of check-in until the time of this communication:

  • 1,200 COVID-19 tests administered
  • 9 positive cases identified as part of check-in process (prior to classes)
  • 1 positive case identified after classes began
  • Several community members associated with that case are in self-quarantine
  • All involved are feeling fine and doing well
  • 0 current active cases on campus currently

This is a small step in the right direction. While other institutions are experiencing  large outbreaks, we have done well because our community — for the most part — is acting responsibly in  following health and safety protocols.. At the same time, we also recognize  that this pandemic is still active and things can change at any moment. This is no time to let our guard down.

TESTING CLINICS SCHEDULED

This week, we hosted a COVID-19 testing clinic for faculty, staff, residential students and commuter students who were not on campus during the three-week session but will be joining us for the 12-week session. Please take note of the following additional testing clinics we will be hosting next week for students who traveled away from their residence hall or their off-campus location during the session break:

Monday and Tuesday, Sept. 14 and 15
8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Ragan Brown Field House
You can sign up for a time slot at this link.

Student-athletes will also be tested on Monday and Tuesday next week and information and times will be sent to you from your coach. If you do not want to be tested on campus, you may provide the result of a negative PCR nasal swab test dated no earlier than 7 days from the testing date to covidscreening@guilford.edu

Please  know that as soon as we are notified of a positive case, our contact tracing team will begin the process of identifying the positive case’s close contacts. The close contacts are immediately notified and moved into quarantine. If you are notified of a positive case on campus by email or through the COVID tracker then the contact tracing most likely will have already been completed and all close contacts have already been identified.

ENJOY WEEKEND ENTERTAINMENT!

The Office of Student Leadership and Engagement has scheduled a movie night for each night during this upcoming weekend at 8 p.m. on the Academic Quad. In the event of inclement weather the movie will take place in Bryan Jr. The Office of Student Leadership and Engagement has also begun producing "What's the G?," which previews weekend programs as well as summarizes what's happening on campus for the next week. If you are interested in receiving "What's the G?," please fill out this form.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO UTILIZE THESE IMPORTANT RESOURCES, AS NEEDED

Guilford College will take every effort to protect personally identifiable  information shared in these documents and will not disclose your identity or the identity of anyone with a coronavirus diagnosis unless disclosure to safety and first aid personnel is required for emergency treatment or is otherwise required by law.

The Health and Safety Task Force again wants to thank you all for taking individual and collective responsibility in keeping our campus healthy and safe. Let’s celebrate this small win and keep the momentum going as we begin the 12-week session.  Be on the lookout for our next weekly update — to be posted online Sept. 18. Please remember that if you have any questions related to COVID-19 and our efforts to mitigate the pandemic on campus please call the COVID-19 Hotline at 336-316-2319.  We are all in this together!

Sincerely,
Jermaine Thomas
